A WOMAN dog walker suffered serious injuries following an accident involving a low-loader lorry which mounted a pavement and knocked over a lamp-post in Wilsden.
Police are investigating how the silver Scania lorry, which was transporting a digger, came to be on the pathway in Haworth Road and whether the woman in her 50s was struck by the vehicle or the falling post.
The accident happened at 12.25pm today on narrowing stretch of two lane road approaching the Ling Bob roundabout and after the junction with Crooke Lane.
The woman was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Haworth Road was closed for nearly two hours and Bradford-bound traffic was diverted along Crooke Lane.
A police spokesman at the scene said they were keen to hear from any witnesses to the accident, particularly those who had been in oncoming traffic at the time or drivers who may have followed the lorry into Wilsden in the direction of Bradford.
Rodger Vanham, a resident of Wilsden for 60 years, said heavy lorries using Haworth road was a problem which people wanted solving.
"I don't drive, but people estimate that they are often going over the 30mph speed limit," Mr Vanham said.
"We have all sorts of heavy wagons going up and down, but there are a lot of chicken wagons which go to and from local factories morning, noon and night, 24/7.
"Something needs to be done about it.
"My suggestion is to put in some speed humps.
"I know it would be expensive, but then again we've just had an accident where someone's been seriously hurt."
A Haworth Road resident, who asked not to be named, said although a lot of heavy goods vehicles used the road, she had not known of there being any serious accidents in the last eight years.
Wilsden parish councillor Tony Caunt said the primary issue in Haworth Road had always been speeding.
"This certainly is a stretch of road where we have often had temporary speed cameras in use and sometimes have clocked people doing 50 to 60mph where the legal limit is 30mph," said Cllr Caunt.
"There is quite a nasty bend just about Crooke Lane and it could be that the lorry ended up on the pavement after trying to negotiate it.
"We haven't had a lot of serious accidents on the road, although drivers do speed up as they head down towards the Ling Bob.
"I don't know if speed played any part in this - I'm sure the police will be investigating that, but it may have been just an unlucky incident.
"At least he didn't hit a house and thankfully it wasn't any worse," Cllr Caunt said.
Witness to the crash should contact West Yorkshire Police on 101.
