A VIOLENT multiple rapist has been jailed for 12 years for the sustained abuse of a timid young woman he overpowered both physically and mentally.
Daniel Smith inveigled his way into the affections of his slightly-built victim and dominated her, forcing her to have sex at three different addresses in Bradford, said the judge sentencing him.
Smith, 27, of Manchester Road, Bradford, was yesterday convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court of three sample offences of raping the woman and one of causing her actual bodily harm by kicking her in the head.
He was cleared of a further three allegations of rape involving the same woman.
David McGonigal, barrister for the Crown, said Smith's victim had self-harmed and had suicidal thoughts since she was repeatedly raped, between February 2011 and August 2013.
She had found it hard to get on with her life, suffering panic attacks and problems sleeping.
She now felt less able to trust people and she had blamed herself, without knowing why.
Smith had no previous convictions for sexual offences but he had been cautioned for battery and common assault on other people.
In mitigation, Smith's solicitor advocate, Andrew Walker, said his client and family were devastated.
He was a self-employed computer repairer who had always been in work.
Smith, who wore a smart dark suit and white shirt, was remanded into custody immediately after the guilty verdicts were delivered.
The judge, Recorder Ian Harris, said Smith's victim was "a timid, polite individual."
She was small and slight, while he was "a rather powerfully built man."
Recorder Harris said Smith came over as "forceful and dogmatic" when he was giving evidence in his trial.
"You inveigled your way into her affections and dominated the relationship," he said.
He raped the woman when she was asleep and forced herself on her when she was awake.
"You overbore her both physically and mentally," Recorder Harris said.
On one occasion, Smith pushed or punched her to the ground and kicked her in the head, fracturing or dislocating her nose.
The woman did not seek medical help but pushed the nose back into position herself.
The judge made a Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning Smith from contacting his victim or going round to her home. He was also ordered to sign on the sex offenders' register.
