LAST-MINUTE thrill-seekers can still sign up for a hair-raising abseil down a Bradford building to support the Lord Mayor's charity appeal.
Volunteers are being sought to fill the few remaining places in tomorrow's annual fundraising challenge, when up to 50 people inch down the side of Bradford Council's Jacob's Well building in Nelson Street.
All money raised will go to the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Mike Gibbons' chosen charities, Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Make It Happen appeal, which gives grants to small groups and organisations throughout the district.
The event is being organised by Gary Peacock, the general manager of the Midland Hotel, on Forster Square, Bradford, who will also be scaling the heights to raise much-needed funds.
"I've done it before, but there will still be a little bit of trepidation when I step out over the edge," Mr Peacock said.
"But, safety is paramount, and we're in good hands with the outdoor pursuits team from the Council.
"We have a group from the Bradford sea cadets taking part, one of whom has raised more than £300 on their own, which is great.
"David Green, who has said from the outset that he has a fear of heights, is also taking part, and it is admirable he is overcoming that fear to raise funds for charity.
"There are still a few places available and people can come down and register on the day, so we look forward to seeing anyone who can help us raise money for such a good cause."
Councillor David Green, the leader of Bradford Council, admitted: "To say I am nervous of heights is an understatement, and I have every intention of staring intently at the wall and not looking down.
"Mike has been a great Lord Mayor for Bradford, so I am determined to grit my teeth to support the excellent charities he has chosen.
"Sponsorship is coming in, and I'm looking to raise a decent amount."
The event takes place between 10am and 4pm, with other faces currently signed up to take part including David Ward, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Bradford East.
People can register on the day by pledging a minimum sponsorship amount of £40, with organisers hoping to raise between £2,500 and £3,000 for the charities.
Both Mr Peacock and Cllr Gibbons visited the site last month to get a sneak preview of the test awaiting the brave participants.
Cllr Gibbons, who will be on-hand to greet some of those daring enough to complete the challenge, said it would provide a great opportunity to get a unique view of the city, while also raising money for a worthwhile cause.
"I admire anyone taking part for their bravery, and I am delighted that so many people are courageous enough to abseil down Jacob's Well to support my civic appeal," he said.
"I am looking forward to meeting many of the intrepid abseilers once they are safely back on terra firma."
