AREAS of Bradford continue to be blighted by fly-tippers, angry residents say.

Parvez Darr said Frizinghall is being ruined by the amount of rubbish littering its streets - as Bradford Council reveals it costs taxpayers approximately £228,500 a year to clean up fly-tipping around the district.

Figures from the authority also revealed that the cost of clearing up fly-tipped waste between December last year and last month was between £70,000 and £80,000.

A fed-up Mr Darr showed the Telegraph & Argus more than ten grotspots around a small area in Frizinghall, off Bradford Road and between Lynthorne Road and Wharncliffe Road.

Streets, alleyways and green spaces were home to a variety of discarded items, including old sofas, fridges, barrels, tyres, beds, mattresses, carpets, bags of rubbish, an old bouncy castle, wood, pillows and cushions.

Mr Darr, 67, of Beamsley Road, Frizinghall, said: "I have lived here for 45 to 50 years and I have never seen it so bad. Residents are fed up.

"It is a shame. It should be cleaned up - no-one cleans this area up. There is rubbish everywhere, nobody is bothered. This area is neglected."

He added: "Local councillors are coming round wanting votes and yet the area is in a mess. They promise to sort things out but nothing ever gets done."

A T&A investigation in February revealed Bowling and Barkerend as the areas in Bradford district which had the most fly-tipping complaints between April 1 and December 31 last year, with 506.

A site on Paley Road in West Bowling was identified as one of the area's worst streets for fly-tipping.

Now an angry resident says the piles of dumped rubbish remain and has called on Bradford Council to clean up a notorious fly-tipping hotspot on her doorstep.

Vicky McMasters says Paley Road has become a dumping ground for fly-tippers.

She says items including tyres, settees, mattresses and bags of household rubbish have been piled up on the street over the last few months.

Miss McMasters, 32, who has lived in Paley Road for the last 12 years, said: "It's depressing. It's absolutely disgusting. I'm just sick of it. It's a mess.

"All of the residents are sick of it too. We are saying we are are not going to pay Council tax because of it. But it's like talking to a brick wall when you talk to the Council about it."

She added: "We have found needles and condoms out there before. There's a bit of everything. Everyone seems to dump what they like down here."

Councillor Rizwana Jamil (Lab, Bowling and Barkerend) said: "I'm also disgusted that the rubbish has not been moved.

"Since it was highlighted a couple of months ago I have been in contact with various council officials asking them to remove this rubbish, with it being such an issue in this area.

"It's absolutely appalling. Until we can tackle the problem, it will become a beacon for other people to dump their rubbish there."

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "Fly-tipping is a national problem. Incidents of fly-tipping dealt with by local authorities increased by 20 per cent from 2012/13 to 2013/14.

"Fly-tipping is illegal as well as anti-social. That’s why we do our best to find evidence to prosecute the criminals who do it.

"Our Environmental Enforcement Team use all possible means of gathering evidence including searching the waste and speaking to any witnesses to enable prosecution of perpetrators.

"If rubbish is tipped on Council land we clean it up as soon as possible and we try to ensure private land-owners do the same."
