A PLAN to allow Keighley Town Council to take over the running of a run-down building in Utley Cemetery should be dropped, according to two town councillors.
Councillors John Kirby and Geraldine Stack will propose that the council should not take over the chapel in Utley Cemetery.
Their resolution will be voted on at the latest full, monthly town council meeting in Keighley Town Hall at 6.30pm on Thursday.
Support for the idea of taking on the neglected chapel building, first made public late last year, drew condemnation from the then Keighley MP Kris Hopkins.
He accused the town council of failing to learn financial lessons from its troubled civic centre venture.
But allotments and landscapes committee chairman Cllr Brian Morris said that a 25-year-old lease for the chapel would only involve paying a peppercorn rent to Bradford Council.
Cllr Morris said the building was an important part of Keighley’s heritage, and would end up a complete ruin if no one takes responsibility for it.
