Residents have complained to Bradford Council after a bus stop sign attached to a lamp post was removed when the redundant street light was taken down, then reinstated on the wrong side of the road.

Now people are faced with two signs alongside one another - one for the 612 to Bradford - and the other for the same service to Shipley - and the blunder is causing confusion.

Elaine Neale, of Gordon Terrace, Idle, contacted the Telegraph & Argus, over the mistake.

She said that bus drivers, who did not know the route and stops fully, were missing out the Town Lane stop as the sign was no longer in the right place. Although there are still white markings on the road indicating a bus stop, she added, it was causing problems for bus users.

In addition the lamp post that was removed also had a litter bin attached to it, which has not been replaced, meaning litter is being strewn across the road.

She said: "Several weeks ago Bradford Council in its wisdom removed the defunct iron lamp standard in Town Lane, Idle.

"Very commendable as scrap metal is at a premium but on the lamp post was the bus stop sign to Shipley and the litter bin, neither of which were returned in any form."

She added: "After many phone calls the bus stop sign was reinstated on Town Lane, but on the opposite side of the road where it was put alongside the bus stop sign to Bradford. One says to Bradford, and the other to Shipley."

It follows new street lighting being installed on Town Lane, which means the old posts are being removed but Mrs Neale, 73, believes the lamp post on the other side of the street, which currently has the wrong sign attached to it, will also be pulled down shortly as it is also redundant.

Mrs Neale had previously asked for a bus shelter to be installed at the stop, but was told there was insufficient space to do so.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "The bus stop sign was removed as part of a scheme to replace the old and rusting lamp posts with new ones on Town Lane.

"We informed Metro that it wouldn't be possible to refit the bus stop sign to the new lamp post on the Shipley bound side of the road due its new location. New bus stop signs are the responsibility of the transport authority."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Combined Authority, said: “We would like to thank the Telegraph and Argus’s readers for alerting us to this problem.

“Our contractor will attend site this morning to remove the plate and install a temporary stop until we can erect a new bus stop pole.”
