A CHARITY has knitted more than 10,000 Easter chicks, raising £15,000 in the process.

The Carers' Resource, which has bases in Bradford and Craven districts, came up with the idea of knitting covers for Cadbury Creme Eggs seven years ago.

Every year, supporters of the charity team up with Cadbury to knit Easter chick covers for the famous chocolate eggs. The creations are then sold across Yorkshire for a donation of £1.50.

One couple has knitted and decorated 2,158 of the covers between them over the years.

Events and fundraising manager for the Carers’ Resource Anne Wells said: "This success story is a feather in the cap - quite literally - of all those people who give up their time so freely to knit these covers, as well as everyone in our community who sells them on our behalf.

"We are also delighted to be able to draw upon the generosity of Cadbury, who have backed this initiative every year since day one, and take an active interest in the work that we are able to do as a result.

"The chicks are not just a great Easter present, they also play an important role in raising awareness of the vital work we do in helping unpaid carers from all walks of life and of all ages overcome the day-to-day pressures that their role brings."

The money raised helps the charity, which has offices in Shipley and Skipton, support people who look after a loved one.

The covers are available from a range of outlets, from schools to cafes to Rotary Clubs, across Yorkshire, as well as from its offices in Parkview Court, Shipley, and Broughton Hall business park, Skipton.
