TWO Bradford constituencies are among the UK's worst ten places for casualty-causing crashes, according to a new report.

Bradford East and West both feature prominently in data released by car insurer Direct Line and the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS).

The report - which has analysed 2013 - places Bradford East fifth-worst out of 632 constituencies in two of its categories: number of crashes resulting in injury or death; and pedestrian casualties.

In the former, it is 41 per cent higher than the national average, and 99 per cent higher in the latter.

T&A COMMENT: CRASHES TREND CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE

David Ward, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Bradford East, said: "It is shocking. There is some absolutely abysmal and anti-social driving that occurs in Bradford East. I see it in my constituency on almost a daily basis.

"The behaviour of certain drivers is totally unacceptable. There needs to be some policing on this by ourselves."

He added: "The behaviour of young men in particular is just completely unacceptable and does really need to be dealt with.

"They have to be prosecuted. It is downright dangerous driving and is also annoying for other drivers.

"It is about standards and the way that people have no sense of responsibility towards others. It is a sense of 'I can do what I want'."

Bradford West was joint-sixth-worst for the number of crashes resulting in injury or death (40 per cent higher than the national average), while it finished joint-fourth nationally for the number of crashes resulting in injury or death for driver or passenger (56 per cent higher).

In the number of crashes resulting in injury or death statistics, Bradford South was 85th (19 per cent higher than national average), Keighley was 217th (six per cent higher), while Shipley was best-placed at 276th (two per cent higher).

James McLoughlin, spokesman for road safety charity Brake, said: "Road deaths and injuries are preventable tragedies, so it is shocking to see casualties in Bradford are significantly above the national average.

"Police forces need to make roads policing a priority so risky, illegal drivers can be caught and punished. We also urge drivers in Bradford to take care on roads, keeping well below speed limits, never driving after drink or drugs, and putting phones on silent and out of reach."

The report reveals how many collisions resulting in injury or death there were in Bradford district's five constituencies in 2013. In Bradford East there were 405, with no deaths; Bradford West 410 with six deaths; Bradford South 284 with two deaths; Shipley 242 with three deaths; and Keighley 259 with four deaths.

Mike Holliday-Williams, Managing Director Personal Lines at Direct Line, said: "Now, for the first time, MPs have specific road casualty information based on their constituency boundaries and its residents. We hope the Road Safety Dashboard will provide a catalyst for action aimed at reducing deaths and injury at a local level, as the diversity of results demonstrate there is a no ‘one size fits all’ solution."
