MURDER squad detectives, hunting the brutal killer of a Bradford grandad who was tortured to death have arrested a new suspect.

The 32-year-old man was held by officers yesterday on suspicion of the murder of Clement 'Butch' Desmier.

The suspect, who has not previously been arrested, remained in custody last night for questioning by detectives.

A 19-year-old man, who was arrested in January in connection with the murder, remains on police bail.

Mr Desmier, 68, a father-of-six and grandfather-of-ten, was found dead in his armchair, at his house in Rowlestone Rise, Greengates, Bradford, on Thursday, August 23, 2012.

He had a pillow over his head and had been viciously attacked, suffering 70 separate injuries, including 40 stab wounds. He had also been tortured before he was killed.

The motive for his gruesome murder remains unclear, but is thought to have been robbery or burglary. But last year police made a breakthrough with new forensic leads.

There has been a huge police investigation into Mr Desmier's murder, which has included numerous public appeals, by both police and the victim's family, and a £10,000 Crimestoppers reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Police have made several appeals to identify a man seen entering Mr Desmier's house with him on the afternoon before he was found, and two people seen in his garden in the early hours of the following day.

Police also released CCTV footage of a man walking in Redcar Road, Ravenscliffe - 100 yards from Mr Desmier's home - a few minutes after the victim was seen entering the property with a man.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Ridley, who led the murder investigation, has said he firmly believed those responsible would have confided with others and that those people would have links to the local community.

Mr Desmier's only son, Carl, has previously spoken of how much his father was missed and said: "Greengates is a tight-knit community and I can assure whoever did this, it has not been forgotten about."

Daughter Lorna described Mr Desmier as a "likeable and popular man with a heart of gold".

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed last night: "Police have arrested a man this morning in connection with the murder of Clement Desmier. The man is currently in custody at a police station for questioning.

"Another 19-year-old man, who was arrested in January in connection with the murder, remains on police bail."

The spokesman said significant inquiries had been ongoing since Mr Desmier had been found dead and police continued to appeal for information.
