In support of Fairtrade Fortnight, Morrisons is introducing Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance ground coffee into 110 of its cafes across the country.

The coffee will complement the organic Fairtrade tea already available. The company is also running promotional offers on grocery, wine and flowers, with special deals on lemons, avocados, mangoes, pineapples and bananas.

Andy Garton, Morrisons Fairtrade fresh produce buyer, says the firm is "delighted" to be able to offer a wide range of Fairtrade products.

"By buying them, customers can be confident that they're helping producers in developing countries achieve a better quality of life," he adds.

Sainsbury's, which became the first major supermarket in the UK to sell Fairtrade in 1994, is launching some new products during the fortnight, including the Fairtrade Cocoa Pod, an egg modelled on a real cocoa pod, made with dark Fairtrade chocolate from the Ivory Coast. Other goods sold under the label include organic Fairtrade chocolate ice cream made from sugar cane grown by farmers in Paraguay.

And for every bottle of wine sold from a Fairtrade selection, cash goes directly to funding a project to help a community of workers in Argentina where there is no regular water supply.

In Shipley, the Olive Branch Fairtrade shop in Westgate is hosting a visit from Sam Magona, a Fairtrade coffee grower from Uganda, who will be visiting the premises on Wednesday, February 28, at 12.15pm.

"This is an excellent opportunity to find out at first hand how Fairtrade is making a difference to the lives of African farmers and their families," says manager Anna Leinster. "It's also no hardship to switch to drinking the coffee that Mr Magona and his colleagues grow."
