A HIT and run driver left a 12 year old boy with a broken foot after he was struck by a vehicle on a pedestrian crossing in Bradford.

Police are now trying to trace the motorist involved in the incident, which happened on Wednesday afternoon at the Southfield Road junction with Little Horton Lane.

According to police, the traffic lights were believed to have been at red for traffic at the time of the impact.

PC Steve Suggitt, from the Western Area Safer Roads and Neighbourhood Support (SRANS) Team, said: ‘‘The incident occurred around 3pm on Wednesday afternoon when the pedestrian was crossing Southfield Road at the junction with Little Horton Lane when lights are believed to have been red for traffic.

‘‘A black coloured saloon vehicle, which we believe was an Audi A4 or VW Passat, is thought to have come through the lights and run over the pedestrian's foot which has caused him to fall to the floor. We believe the car has then stopped briefly before driving off in the direction of the motorway.

‘‘Following the incident a number of local people have helped the pedestrian off the road who has then gone home and told his parents who took him to hospital where the foot injury was diagnosed and treated.

‘‘The area will have been busy around the time and I need anyone who saw what happened or helped the pedestrian to come forward. We need to find the person driving this car. It takes a particularly callous person to hit a child with a car and then leave them injured in the middle of the road. This individual needs to be identified and brought before the courts.

‘‘There a number of schools in the area and the road would have been busy at the time. If you can help with the investigation please come forward.’’
