Detectives are investigating after human remains were found near Cleckheaton.
Police were called to Scholes Lane, Scholes, shortly before 2pm yesterday.
A spokesman said today: "Officers attended the scene and have confirmed that the remains are those of a human. These will be the subject of further tests.
"It is too early to confirm whether there are any suspicious circumstances. Inquiries are continuing."
A public footpath remained taped with a police officer and two crime investigation vans at the scene.
One Scholes Lane resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s terrible, especially to happen somewhere like this. It’s very, very quiet.”
Another, who also did not want to be identified, said: “It’s shocking. It’s quite a backwater location.
“I did not expect anything like this to happen here.”
