THE first visitors to Bradford's big wheel have been enjoying the spectacular views it provides of the city.
The Bradford Eye, which was installed in Centenary Square over three days, opened to the public today at 11am.
And among the first to try out the 35-metre high structure, which will be lit up at night, was the Telegraph & Argus.
Operators John Wright and Michelle Jennings gave reporter Rhys Thomas and photographer Mike Simmonds three spins of the wheel, even stopping at the top to afford far-reaching views of Bradford in all directions.
On what was a clear, sunny day, the eye could see as far as the windmills at Oxenhope, near Keighley, while also taking in landmarks closer to the city centre such as Lister Mills and various old warehouses.
Rows and rows of terraced houses could be seen, particularly to the north and south of the city, as well as the University of Bradford, a number of mosques, the Provident Financial building, and the blossoming Westfield development at Broadway. It also provides a different perspective of City Park.
The bird's eye view also reveals some of the city centre's architecture in all its splendour, including City Hall, Britannia House, St George's Hall, and the former Brown and Muff building in Market Street, among others.
One observer remarked that Bradford city centre "had a look of Prague" from the sky, such was the quality and stature of some of its buildings.
The wheel's 24 gondolas can seat six people and also have a function that allows them to be spun. Mr Wright said each everyone who goes on the ride will get five rotations on the wheel, giving plenty of time
Jan de-Koning, who owns the wheel, said he is confident the ride will be a hit in the city over the Easter holiday.
"We hope the giant wheel will be a fantastic addition to the various events going on in the city over the holidays and it is something that will appeal to all ages.
"The attraction has proved popular up and down the country in many towns and cities and is one of the biggest of its kind Europe. We are proud and also grateful to Bradford Council for allowing us to bring the wheel to such a fantastic location as Centenary Square."
The Bradford Eye is open every day until April 19. It will be open from 11am to 6pm, Sunday to Thursday, from 11am to 10pm on Fridays, and 10am to 10pm on Saturdays.
