A mother who killed her 22-month-old daughter when she jumped from an upstairs window while mentally ill has been sent to a secure hospital indefinitely.

Gundeep Sanghera, 37, today denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility when she appeared at Bradford Crown Court.

Sanghera's daughter, Amrita Kaur, died, and her mother suffered serious injuries when they fell from the bathroom window of their home in Delamere Street, Marshfields, Bradford, on February 18 last year.

The court heard that Sanghera had come to Bradford with her daughter after fleeing domestic violence in her middle-class marriage.

She was a caring mother, but two weeks before the tragedy she began suffering from a psychotic mental illness, suffering delusions, including that her daughter was going to be taken from her and tortured.

Sanghera wept as she listened to the proceedings in a wheelchair. She was allowed to sit in the well of the court to be sentenced.

The court was told she came to the UK with a first class degree and had nurtured and was devoted to her child.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC said it was a tragic case. He made a secure hospital order under section 37 of the Mental Health Act with an indefinite restriction on release to protect the public.
