MORE than 100 young people have been recognised for their sporting achievements.

A ceremony, organised by the district’s youth service, was held last night to celebrate a hugely successful year for cycling in the district.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Mike Gibbons presented certificates to children and teenagers who had achieved a range of local and national qualifications.

The accreditations, presented at Bradford’s Dubrovnik Hotel, included the Lord Mayor’s Awards, the Local Awards and the Community Sports Leaders Awards.

Councillor Ralph Berry, Bradford Council’s executive member for children and young people, said: “It’s great news that we are recognising so many young people and celebrating their success. They should be proud of what they have accomplished.”

As Tour de France fever swept through the district last summer, more than 1,500 young people got involved with cycling events, including 600 disabled youngsters.

Steve Hartley, the council’s strategic director of sport, said: “Cycling is a great way in which young people can participate in sport, get fit and make friends. “ “The events that our youth service has organised mean that young people who may be cycling for the first time or who may have a disability can enjoy cycling in a safe environment with help and support.”
