SCHOOLS from across Bradford will battle it out in a mock court trials competition in the city.

The event, held at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, will see students take part in a heat of the national Magistrates’ Court Mock Trials competition.

Six Bradford district schools, including Beckfoot School, Carlton Bolling College and Dixon’s City Academy, will join four other schools from across Yorkshire.

Teams of up to 13 students will use witness statements to prepare the prosecution and defence for a specially written criminal case.

They will play witnesses, lawyers, magistrates and court officials.

The Bradford heat will be judged by real magistrates, with The High Sheriff of Yorkshire, the Rt Hon Mr Charles Dent and the Chairman of Bradford and Keighley Magistrates, Mrs Vicky Reynolds.

The top two teams will go forward to the regional final, to be held in Leeds in May.

The competition will see 400 schools from across the country taking part. It is run by the Citizenship Foundation, sponsored by the Jomati Foundation and organised by Magistrates Association and supported by The Law Society.
