BRITISH citizens from West Yorkshire could be travelling to the Middle East, counter terrorism experts have admitted.
The National Police Counter Terrorism Network yesterday started the latest phase of an awareness campaign for families to prevent young people travelling to Syria.
More than 20 missing women and girls are feared to have gone there in the last year.
A spokesman for the Counter Terrorism Unit said: “We know that some of those travelling are from the North East region.” But the CTU would not give a breakdown of how many or where they were from.
The region covers seven police forces, including West Yorkshire.
The spokesman said: “While these people may be travelling for a variety of reasons, travel to the Middle East for any purpose is extremely unsafe and strongly discouraged.”
Anyone who is concerned about a friend or loved one who is planning to travel should call their local police, in confidence, on 101.
