FAMILY and friends gathered to help a Bradford woman celebrate her 100th birthday at the care home where is described as a ‘dream resident’.

Edith Smith was the centre of attention at a party at the Holly Park home in Clayton on Saturday to mark the big day. Her youngest son Allan Smith said: “We had kept telling her a big birthday was coming up so she knew something special was happening.”

Mrs Smith was born into a large Derbyshire mining family. She met her husband, Horace, when they lived on the same street and they married on Christmas Eve in 1938.

The couple’s first son, Derrick, was born in 1940 and Allan in 1941.

With Mr Smith working as an engineer, the family moved to Bradford in 1944 and lived in the Frizinghall area until 2001 when Mrs Smith moved to Clayton to be near relatives.

Widowed 20 years ago, she lived independently until she was 98.
