BRADFORD Council hopes to merge a service with its neighbour in Kirklees to secure its future.
Building control services would be merged across the two authorities if the proposal gets the go-ahead. The service makes sure new-builds comply with building regulations, but unlike other council services, it faces competition from private firms who can also carry out inspections.
A new report says a merger with Kirklees could secure its future.
It says there are different ways the councils could share the service, including a straightforward merger, or setting up a company jointly owned by the two councils.
Coun Val Slater, executive member for planning, said: “The proposed joint service is designed to improve standards, reduce costs and improve operational income.
“It would ensure that the two councils not only survive the current financial challenges, but continue to grow and prosper as a more resilient service for the two districts.”
Bradford’s Executive, which meets on Tuesday, March 10, will be asked whether they support the merger in principle so planning can go ahead.
