WHEN 11-year-old Kian Barker found out he would be going to Samuel Lister Academy in September, his parents had never even heard of the school.

Kian's family live on The Stray in Idle, almost five miles away from the Cottingley school, and had applied for five other schools, including first choice Immanuel College, just 1.4 miles away.

Mum Leanne Brown, who works and will be unable to drive him to Cottingley, said: "We are definitely appealing this, it is just ridiculous. It is a 10 mile round trip he will have to face at 11-years-old.

COMMENT: RETURN TO A LOCAL SCHOOL CULTURE NEEDED

"We've worked out that to get there he is going to have to walk to Wrose, get a bus to Shipley, change in Shipley then get another bus to Cottingley. If we can't get it sorted we're going to have to move.

"If children can't get into local schools now, what is it going to be like when they build all the proposed houses around Apperley Bridge?"

Leanne Baker's daughter Alicia Rosconie, 10, was also allocated Samuel Lister, despite the fact that the family live in Thornacre Crescent in Wrose and had not included the school in their choices.

She says they were told that there was a high demand for schools in that area.

They also say around 20 other children at their school, Low Ash, were allocated Samuel Lister despite it not being on their lists.

They also plan to appeal the decision, and have written to local MP Philip Davies and even David Cameron's office has written to say they will be in touch about her disappointment.

Miss Baker said: "If the Council know there are pressures on places, why don't they build more schools?"
