A 24-hour jiu jitsu "throwathon" and other marathon tests of endurance are among events being held at Bradford University this week to raise money for the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Crocus Appeal.

The students' union is holding its Raising and Giving (RAG) week, with a huge variety of fundraising events planned for the appeal.

The ongoing appeal, a partnership between the Telegraph & Argus, the University, Yorkshire Cancer Research and Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust, aims to raise £1 million to help pay for a new mass spectrometer for Bradford University’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics – the machine will mean scientists can study the role of proteins in cancer ten times faster than before.

Since it was set up in 2013, fundraisers have abseiled, run and parachuted out of planes to raise money for the appeal.

This year, the university has come up with a variety of unique events for RAG week, which is also raising funds for the Penny Appeal and Bradford Action for Refugees.

Starting at noon today is a 24-hour fundraising all-nighter that will see students attempt to break a 24-hour netball shootout record, a 24-hour jiu jitsu throwdown, a "100 stunt challenge" with the Bradford Ravens Cheerleaders, "give it a go" mixed martial art sessions, dance offs and a 24-hour pass with the women's rugby team.

There will be further fundraising as the week goes on, with an activity day on Wednesday and a ladies night on Friday.

As well as raising money, the union hopes the events further raise awareness for the charity.

Zekarias Haileselassie, environment and welfare officer at the Union of Students, said: “Raise And Give Week is a fun, exciting and innovative opportunity to galvanise as many students to raise as much money as possible for noble causes in the community and across the UK.

“It provides a space for students to use their creativity and their skills in organising fun and vibrant activities and/or events for other students to enjoy while fundraising at the same time. It’s operated at every students union across the country and is the most effective tool at engaging the wider student population in their events and activities.

“Bradford RAG happens every academic year and is seeking to reach new heights by holding fundraising activities for the whole year rather than just one week and by linking it to the wider community.”
