PEOPLE sick of new traffic problems after the scrapping of the infamous Saltaire roundabout have joined with local councillors to call for more changes.
All three ward councillors are supporting the enraged residents in Tower Road, Dallam Road and Carlton Road who are now plagued by wagons and delivery vans cutting through to the Hirst Lane industrial estate.
They have collected signatures to lobby for a possible ban on HGV's turning into the narrow streets below the main road into Bradford.
And from the other side of Bingley Road, a petition has been lodged with Shipley Area Committee calling for more road humps on Bankfield Road, Nab Wood Drive, Avondale Road and Grosvenor Road.
Green Party councillors Kevin Warnes, Martin Love and Hawarun Hussain met with residents at the top of Tower Road on Saturday in a public show of support.
Retired postman Terry Cook has lived in Tower Road for 35 years and said he wanted the council to concede there was now a serious traffic problem in previously quiet streets.
"We want acceptance of how bad things are and we need some solutions," Mr Cook said.
Anne Langley has lived in the road for nearly as long and said another issue was dangerous winter conditions.
"Big wagons are now coming down here - but the gritting lorries won't. Cars are always skidding down the hill when it gets icy," she said.
Tower Road resident of ten years Stuart Hedges said he knew the answer:
"All the roads round here should be turned into cul-de-sacs, closed off where they meet Bingley Road, that would stop the rat-run problem permanently," Mr Hedges said.
As part of the major improvements to the Saltaire junction, which saw the roundabout replaced by lights, some surrounding roads were given new 20mph zones and speed humps to deter "rat-running."
However on the Nab Wood and Moorhead side there are still speeding problems which are identified in the officers' report to Shipley Area Committee.
Ward councillor Kevin Warnes said he and his colleagues supported all the residents claims.
"The new 20mph zones are working and average traffic speeds are down on most streets.
"But a number of traffic hotspots remain and require further action.
"We want the Area Committee to recommend a robust response to the traffic nuisance that residents are concerned about.
"Residents need to know that the Council is on their side when it comes to dealing with dangerous driving and be assured it will step in when neighbourhoods are being blighted by rat-running traffic looking to shave a few seconds off their journey times.
"They also need to be protected from the dangers of HGV traffic that should not be allowed to force its way through narrow residential streets."
Councillor Martin Love said he was sure SatNavs were to blame for much of the commercial traffic heading down residential streets to the Hirst Lane Estate.
"I think lorries' SatNavs fail to adjust to the new road layout until it's too late and they've already gone past the designated Hirst Lane turn.
"So they take the next right turns coming out of Bradford and those are Dallam Road and Tower Road," Cllr Love said.
Shipley Area Committee meets at 6pm in Bingley Town Hall on Wednesday, January 28.
