THIS photograph of Winston Churchill, cigar in mouth, giving his famous ‘V’ for victory sign during a visit to Bradford in December 1942 has been released by the Imperial War Museum as a series of events were announced to honour the life and legacy of Britain’s wartime leader who died 50 years ago.

Commemorations will be held in the UK and abroad to celebrate Churchill’s achievements and his impact on the world today as part of Churchill 2015, including a flotilla sailing down the River Thames in London to mark the anniversary of his funeral.

The year of celebrations was announced yesterday at the Churchill War Rooms in Whitehall, an event attended by Churchill’s granddaughter, Emma Soames.

Historian and Churchill 2015 chairman Professor Sir David Cannadine said: “Churchill was always news in his life and I think 50 years on he is still news in his death, and there aren’t many public figures of whom that can be said half a century later.”

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Half a century after his death, Winston Churchill’s legacy continues to inspire not only the nation whose liberty he saved, but the entire world. His words and his actions reverberate through our national life today.

"This is a year to remember Winston Churchill’s extraordinary life of achievement, to admire and to celebrate it anew and to give thanks for his service not only to the country he loved, but to humanity as a whole.”
