UPDATE: Snow causes more than 40 school closures across the Bradford district

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow for Yorkshire and the Humber today.

Several of the district's schools have now been closed. Hanson School, Ellar Carr PRU and Carlton Bolling College are all fully closed to students and staff today.

Thornton Grammar School will close after lunch. The school's Year 8 and 9 options event, due to be held tonight, has been postponed. 

Crossley Hall Primary School will close at 2pm today. Parents are advised to collect children from the usual place.

Parkside School will close at noon today due to the weather. Buses will come on site at that time to collect students. The school’s pantomime, due to be held tonight, has been cancelled.

Russell Hall Primary School will shut at 1.15pm. Children will have lunch on-site as usual, and pupils who cannot be collected can stay at the school.

Carrwood Primary School was due to open at 10am.

Clayton Village Primary School will shut at 1.30pm.

Hanson School will also be shut today.

Poplars Farm Primary School and Fagley Primary School will close at 1.15pm. Children will have school lunch on-site as normal and parents can collect their children from 1pm.

Shibden Head Primary Academy will close at 1.15pm but children will be supervised until 3pm.

Bingley’s St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School will close from 1pm.

Denholme Primary School will shut at 1pm, with children looked after on-site until 3.15pm.

Farfield Primary School and St James’ Church Primary School will both close at 1.15pm, while Lister Primary School and Westbourne Primary School will both shut at 2pm.

Queensbury School will also close.

Worth Valley Primary School has also closed its doors but will remain open for children to be collected until 3pm. It will re-open at 8.45am tomorrow.

Clayton CE Primary School, Thackley Primary School and Reevy Hill Primary School will both shut at 1.15pm,

Parents can pick their children up from Lilycroft Primary School at 2pm but the school will remain open for all children who cannot be collected.

Haworth Primary School is also shut.

Margaret McMillan Primary School will not have any after-school clubs after it closes at 1.45pm.

Oxenhope CE Primary School, St Philip’s CE Primary School and Thorpe Primary School will all close at 1pm. 

Horton Park Primary School will shut at 1pm, St Luke’s CE Primary School and Shipley’s St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School will close at 2pm.

Heaton St Barnabas’ CE Primary School also closed its doors today.

More schools shut at lunchtime, including Bradford Girls’ Grammar School, Hill Top Primary School and Laycock Primary School.

Lapage Primary School will stay open until 3pm, but there will be no after-school activities today. Oxenhope CE Primary School and Peel Park Primary School shut at 1pm and 2pm respectively.

Princeville Primary School, St Matthew’s CE Primary School, Stanbury Village School, Thornton Primary School, Lidget Green Primary School, Wilsden Primary School and Sandy Lane also closed.

Allerton Children’s Centre’s Avenel Road and Allerton Methodist Church site shut its doors from 2pm.

But Barkerend Primary School announced it would stay open as usual until 3pm. 

Leeds Bradford Airport was forced to close at 4am after around 5cm of snow came down during the night, causing a disruption to flights. The airport was closed until 10am, and has now reopened but flight delays are expected.

A spokesman for the airport said snow ploughs and gritters were working along the runways and passengers should arrive as normal, but expect knock-on delays.

Holidaymakers had so far been understanding about the problems caused by the difficult weather conditions, the spokesman added.

West Yorkshire Police posted on Twitter: "Please take extra care when driving today in these cold & icy conditions. We want you to get to your destination safely."

On the trains, a minor disruption was reported on the Northern Rail service between Ilkley and Leeds. The Bradford Forster Square to Leeds route is reporting no problems with its service.

First's 542 bus service is operating a full route. Its 846 service to Shipley is using main roads, avoiding Ashbourne Estate.

According to the Met Office forecast for Bradford today, temperatures are not expected to get above 1C.

It forecasts light snow and sleet this morning before cloudy conditions take over.

Tonight is set to be a mixture of rain and cloud, with a minimum temperature of -2C.

Motorists in many parts of the district faced a difficult journey at morning rush hour today, with some areas have seen accumulations of 2cm to 5 cm overnight, mostly above 150m but also at lower levels in places.
