THE owners of a business operating from of a former city centre pub will have to remove a number of signs that have “festooned” the building.
Saeed Khan had submitted a retrospective planning application for signs on the former City Hotel, a grade II listed building, now an IK Clearance Outlet.
Planning officers refused the application yesterday, describing the 19th century pub in City Road as being “festooned” with signage advertising the business and the products it sells. Their report in which they refuse the application says: “The existing signage is excessive with the result that the character of the building is completely smothered by adverts which have become the dominant visual feature.
“The business’s presence is welcome. However, it is unacceptable because it still causes harm to the listed building.”
