COUNCILLORS have attacked plans for a privately-run cemetery near one of the district’s beauty spots.

Proposals for the cemetery near Keighley Tarn were publicised for consultation last September and a planning application was submitted later.

The applicant, Keighley Community Cemetery, wants to operate the facility on the former Braithwaite Edge Quarry and Landfill site.

But Keighley West ward councillor Brian Morris said: “Locating a cemetery at the top of the valley is inappropriate. What will happen when decomposing body fluids leach out in cases where a body has not been embalmed and this enters the water courses?”

Councillor Jan Smithies said: “I’m really concerned about the water run-off.”

Mineral Planning Group, acting for the applicant, said: “It is our clients’ intention to provide a quality private cemetery facility that supports the local community in finding a compassionate way to remember their loved ones.”
