SCHOOL pupils have been shown some of the skills needed to make beautiful but transient works of art from blocks of ice.
Sculptors Jamie Wardley and Tom Bolland, of the company Sand in Your Eye, visited Nessfield Primary School on an appropriately snowy day yesterday.
They took a one-metre high block of ice and used it to create a wintry owl sculpture in the Keighley school’s playground.
Mr Wardley, who is the company’s artistic director, said: “One of the children had the idea that we should make an owl sculpture – an owl is part of the symbol of Nessfield Primary.
“We used a chainsaw, a drill and chisels to make the owl in the playground.
“The kids watched us make it and asked lots of questions. They absolutely loved it, they really enjoyed seeing the owl emerge.
“We also did an assembly with them where I spoke about how I became a sculptor. It was an inspirational day and it was about stressing the importance of having the right attitude, taking opportunities and not being afraid of making mistakes.”
