YOUNG Bradfordians have been living on just £1 a day to raise much-needed money for Save The Children.
Members of the Bradford Junior Chamber International (JCI) have taken on the Pound a Day Challenge for the third year running, going hungry to increase awareness of the need for poverty relief.
By limiting their budget to £1 a day for food and drink, participants donate the remainder of their normal daily shopping budget to boost the appeal.
Brogan Hirst, marketing director for JCI Bradford, said: "To us, Christmas is the season to eat drink and be merry, however some aren't so lucky and cannot afford such luxuries.
"Our members were challenged to live on just £1 a day for food and drink for a week, and donate the difference between that and what their normal shop would usually be.
"As a member who has been involved for the first time this year, it really gives you an idea of the struggle other people must have living on £1 a day, or even less, from meals, to small things we take for granted like tea bags or salt.
"I am sure all other members feel this way too, and I am extremely happy to be helping such a worthy cause.
"I hope the £1 a day challenge becomes even more popular, and we can raise more money than in the past two years."
JCI is a global network for young people in their 20s and 30s, with almost 200,000 members in more than 100 countries across the world.
Since 2013, UK members have raised more than £2,500 for Save The Children, with the money put towards essential work in combating hunger in both the UK and developing countries.
Kathryn Brookes, one of the Bradford JCI members who took part in the challenge, said: "The Pound a Day Challenge is a fantastic way to raise awareness of food poverty, and experiencing the daily struggle that some people have to go through is such an eye opener.
"It’s quickly noticed by work colleagues at lunchtime that you’re eating differently, or visiting the vending machine a lot less, and is a fantastic discussion point.
"I thought, 'what can I get for such a little amount?'
"On day three of the challenge, I enjoyed egg and chips for dinner, coming in at just 34p.
"Fruit and vegetables in the reduced aisle was also one not to miss, as were the own brand Custard Creams at 1p per biscuit.
"You find after completing the challenge, you are much more aware of money-saving opportunities, and a lot more concerned about potentially wasted food when filling your trolley."
