A 50-YEAR history of Sikh temples in Bradford will be given during a free lecture in the city.

To mark the golden jubilee year of the first Sikh temple established in the district, MBE Dr Ramindar Singh will speak at Bradford Local Studies Library.

The first Sikh temple was established by a small number of Sikhs in a former carpet warehouse in Garnett Street in 1965. The building was demolished, but there are seven other gurdwaras in the Bradford district.

“The lecture will look at how the Sikh community has grown and changed in Bradford over the last 50 years,” said Dr Singh, who holds an MA from the Punjab University and an MSc in economics from Bradford University.

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s executive member for employment, skills and culture, said: “This lecture provides a great opportunity to gain an insight into a unique part of Bradford’s social history.”

The library is located via the side entrance of the old Central Library building, the Margaret Macmillan Tower, in Princes Way. The event is on January 21, at 2.15pm.
