A KEIGHLEY woman has written a book about her childhood in a poverty-stricken part of town during the Second World War.
Mary Jennings’ paperback Growing Up In Grant Street chronicles her first 11 years living in the short terraced street.
Grant Street lies on what was originally known as Calversyke Hill, and while growing up, Mary witnessed the building of the Guard House council estate.
Mary, who now lives in Laycock, said she wanted to recount the experience of surviving physical and emotional neglect in a family where her parents put their own needs before those of their children.
She said: “It is also a view of the ups and downs of living through the war years as seen through the eyes of a child.”
Copies of the book cost £5.99 from the Amazon and Waterstones websites.
