JUST out of a two-year driving ban, learner driver Jamie Halford took to the road having “forgotten” he needed to pass an extended driving test.

Halford had not even passed a basic test and was still only a provisional licence holder when he was stopped driving his friend’s car at Beamsley Hill on the A65, Skipton magistrates were told.

The 22-year-old, of Niffany Gardens, Skipton, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and driving without insurance, on December 1.

Nadine Clough, prosecuting, said his original ban had included a requirement to take an extended driving test, but he told officers when stopped that he was unaware he had such an order.

Keith Blackwell, for Halford, said he had not breached his two year ban but the “sting in the tale” was that he had forgotten he needed to take an extended test.

The bench sentenced Halford to an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of community service.

He was banned from driving for 12 months and told he must pay a £60 victims surcharge and £85 towards court costs.
