IN THE run-up to Christmas, revellers in Bradford are being warned about perils of drunk walking.
Data released by price comparison website Confused.com reveals a peak in drunk walking injuries in December.
The statistics show that, across Yorkshire and the Humber, 87 per cent of people have walked home after drinking alcohol, with ten per cent having had ten drinks or more.
Eight per cent of pedestrians in the county have been hit, or nearly been hit, by a car while walking after drinking alcohol. Eight per cent of motorists have hit a pedestrian with their car because the person was drunk.
Also, 21 per cent have stopped their car to help a drunken pedestrian out of the road. James Gibson, director of communications for Road Safety GB, said: “Too many pedestrians are becoming road casualties because they are drunk. Being impaired by alcohol significantly changes behaviour and increases risk-taking.
“In addition, darkness and wearing dark clothing makes it hard for drivers to see and react to pedestrians. This is a hard group for road safety professionals to influence. If you are out in a group look after your friends and think carefully about how you use the roads after drinking.”
