MORE than 1,000 people pounded the streets of Bradford today for the annual City Runs.

Runners young and old took part in four events - a kids' race, 5km, 10km and a half marathon.

The number of runners tackling the route - which started on Godwin Street and finished in City Park - was more than double the amount that entered last year.

Tom Midgley, 28, of Otley AC, was first home in the 10k, beating his clubmate Liam Dunne, 40, into second.

Second behind Victoria was 36-year-old Clare Stonehouse, of Oakenshaw, who suffered a burst lip and cuts to her hands and knees in a fall. She said: "I am overly excited with second place - it is fantastic."
Masood Chowdhury, 41, was one of 25 runners from Islam Bradford. He said: "We wanted to show we are part of the community and to support the Crocus Cancer Appeal."

Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe, who set the runners on their way at the start line, said: "It is a great pleasure to be involved with a wonderful event that is so well organised.

"I think the main thing is that it helps get people fit and active. And to have more than double the number of entrants is brilliant. It is heading the right direction and we want to make it even bigger and better."
The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Mike Gibbons said: "It's a fantastic turnout, absolutely fabulous. And it is tremendous to see so many people out supporting their children, friends and family."

In total, 1,104 people signed up to do the runs, with 138 collecting in aid of the Telegraph & Argus Crocus Cancer Appeal

Telegraph & Argus editor Perry Austin-Clarke said: "It was great to see so many people running through the streets of Bradford to support City Runs. The organisers were hoping to attract 1,000 runners this year and I’m delighted they succeeded.

"Forty per cent of all race entry fees will be going to the Crocus Appeal this year, so to have so many people taking part is brilliant news for the fundraiser as well. There were also 138 people running specifically for the Crocus Appeal whose efforts are appreciated by everyone involved in the campaign.
"Well done, and thank you, to everyone who took part."

Also among the runners was PC Damieon Pickles, 43, who pushed a wheelbarrow around the half-marathon route while wearing a policeman's helmet. It was his 13th half-marathon.
