WITH less than a week to go until the annual City Runs event, we're putting out a final call for readers to back the Telegraph & Argus' £1 million cancer research fundraiser.
This Sunday's event will see hundreds of people taking to Bradford's streets to run either five or ten kilometres, half a marathon or a one-mile family run.
The event, organised by Bradford Council and Bradford Athletics Network, is expected to be the biggest yet and 40 per cent of all race entry fees will go to the Telegraph & Argus Crocus Cancer Appeal.
The T&A is working with the University of Bradford, Yorkshire Cancer Research and the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust to raise money to help make the city's ground-breaking work to fight the disease faster than ever before.
The £1 million will be used to buy a new machine so scientists can study protons in cancer cells at a much quicker pace, meaning they can start working on treatments sooner.
T&A deputy editor Damian Holmes said: "We’ve had a really good response to our appeal to get teams running in aid of the Crocus Appeal this weekend. More than 100 people from across the district are joining Telegraph & Argus and university staff on Sunday to support the £1 million fundraiser, but there’s still time for people to join in.
"The deadline for registering is Thursday, so if you’ve been thinking about taking part but haven’t got round to it, there’s still a few days to get involved.
"Overall, around 1,000 people will take part in City Runs this year so there should be a really good atmosphere and buzz in the city centre.
"Good luck to everyone who’s running and don’t forgot to look out for pictures of yourself in Monday’s Telegraph & Argus and on our website and Twitter."
Runners are being encouraged to don fancy dress for the family and 5k races and the best dressed could win a family weekend break at Park Resorts for up to six people.
We also have spot prizes to give away including tickets for Bradford Cineworld Cinemas, an Aagrah meal voucher for four people, Lightwater Valley tickets, a Sea Life Manchester family pass, a LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester family pass, a Hollywood Bowl family pass, a Bradford Ice Arena Ice Skating family pass, Clubactive Gym membership for 12 months worth £299 and Bradford Aquatics swimming or diving lessons.
Prizes will be given to the youngest and oldest men and women taking part and the 26th person to finish in each race. There will also be one random prize winner selected on the day.
T&A newspaper sales manager Robert Drummond said: "We’re hoping that as many people as possible will enter the runs and have fun, whatever their ability, in raising valuable funds for the T&A Crocus Cancer Appeal, and to make it that little bit more interesting, we are grateful to a number of businesses who have provided spot prizes that will be awarded on the day."
