Two organisations will join forces today in an attempt to focus attention on what they say is pay inequality for some staff at Bradford Teaching Hospitals.
The union UNISON and the newly formed Bradford Citizens group are demanding the ‘living wage’, calculated at £7.65 per hour, to be paid as a minimum to staff rather than the legal minimum wage.
To support the message, activists will be handing out slices of cake to union members working on the wards of Bradford Royal Infirmary, as part of their “fair slice of the cake” initiative.
UNISON branch secretary Amandeep Singh is working with local organiser Michael Parkinson on the initiative, which they say is necessary to combat the effect of public sector pay freezes.
Mr Parkinson, said: “There are so many issues around pay at the moment but it all boils down to a question of fairness.
“It is unfair that all public sector workers have suffered pay freezes over the last four years which, with inflation, are actually pay cuts. We have a situation of pay inequality nationally and locally which increases year by year.”
