Police are appealing for information after the windscreen of a train was shattered by an object hurled from a bridge in Bradford.
The incident happened at about 9.40pm on Tuesday, May 27, as the 9.38pm service from Bradford Forster Square to Ilkley left Frizinghall station in Bradford.
As the train passed under a bridge at Shipley Fields Road, an object hit the driver’s windscreen (pictured).
British Transport Police say the driver was unharmed but left “extremely shaken”.
PC Andrew Storey said: “In addition to the trauma caused to the driver, the cost of repairing the damage to the train is estimated at £8,000.
“We believe the object thrown to be a lump of concrete, but are currently analysing CCTV footage from the driver’s cab. Incidents of this nature are, obviously, extremely serious. They pose a real threat to the life of staff and passengers, cause thousands of pounds worth of damage and result in delays to services.”
Gary Stewart, safety and assurance director for Northern Rail, said acts of vandalism cause the rail network much more than a hefty bill.
He said: “An incident such as this can cause serious shock and upset to our drivers and conductors, and as a result, our passengers can suffer long and unnecessary delays and disruption to their journey.
“A damaged window also means a train has to be taken out of service for repair causing further delays and disruptions to passengers.”
