Keighley is staging its first Armed Forces Day.

The event, on Saturday, June 28, is planned as a tribute to the services and will feature a host of activities.

It is timed to coincide with the countdown to the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Behind the initiative is Keighley man Andrew Spence, in conjunction with the town’s Royal British Legion and cadet units.

“The aim is to provide people with a fun family day out but also build support and recognition for our armed forces,” said Mr Spence.

“Hopefully it may also increase membership of the British Legion and other support organisations, and bring a greater sense of community to the people of Keighley.

“Afterwards we hope to set-up a Keighley armed forces organisation to continue the event in future years and maybe stage other activities to raise awareness and money for charity.”

The day will begin with a half-hour service at Town Hall Square, from 10.15am.

It will be followed at 11am with a ceremony at Cliffe Castle, and then several hours of activities in the grounds of the museum.

The Yorkshire Regiment recruitment team – led by Sgt Gavin Dillon – will be providing an inflatable assault course and military vehicles.

The Northwest 101st Airborne will be present with several vehicles.

There will be field craft displays from the army cadets, drill and radio demonstrations from the air cadets – who are also helping with marshalling – a barbecue, and face painting.
