A 60-year-old carer has been warned that she could be jailed after admitting three offences of ill-treatment relating vulnerable adults at a Bradford care home.

June Downer had been due to stand trial at Bradford Crown Court yesterday, but shortly before lunchtime she formally entered guilty pleas to three charges involving one man and two women.

Details of the ill-treatment were not revealed in court, but it is understood to involve slaps and rough handling of the complainants.

Downer, of South Royds Park, Pudsey, who had no previous convictions, was initially charged with four offences last autumn following an investigation into her behaviour at Ashfield House in Thornton Road in 2012.

The three charges of ill-treatment which she admitted yesterday relate to a period between June and December 2012 and involved complainants who were “lacking mental capacity”.

Judge Neil Davey QC extended Downer’s bail until her sentence hearing on July 7 and ordered a pre-sentence report in the meantime.

But he told Downer that she had admitted serious offences and the request for a report and the granting of bail were no indication of the sentence she would receive.

“You must understand, as I am sure you do, that all sentencing options, including the obvious one of imprisonment, remain open,”' the judge added.

Judge Davey said he needed a pre-sentence report because he knew nothing about Downer’s background and current circumstances or what might be behind the commission of the offences.
