Firefighters had to break into a house tonight after an occupant had apparently turned on the gas supply and started a fire in the front room.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service had been standing by at the address, in Kensington Street, Girlington, when they heard smoke alarms activate so broke their way into the property.
Their progress was hampered because the door had been barricaded but they found a small fire in the front room and were able to extinguish that, while checking the property to locate the occupant, a woman believed to be aged in her 40s.
She was unharmed in a bedroom upstairs which had also had the door barricaded and she was assisted from the property by police before being put into the care of paramedics who also attended.
Firefighters used positive pressure fans to force gas and smoke from the property and gas engineers turned up to cap off the supply. The fire caused only isolated damage to a rug and books in the lounge.
