A summer gala that used to be the highlight of the calendar in a Bradford community is returning next month after decades on ice.
The Fagley Gala will be held on June 7, and the organisers hope that it will bring the community together just like the event did in the past.
And if the day proves popular it could once again become an annual event.
The gala is being organised and funded by a partnership of Fagley Community Centre, housing group Incommunities and Bradford Council’s East Area Co-ordinators office and will be held at the community centre in Fagley Road.
Attractions on the day will include children’s rides and bouncy castle, games, competitions, face-painting, stalls, penalty shoot-out, table-top sale, and, harking back to the gala’s past, there will be the crowning of a gala king and queen.
And the community is already rallying together to ensure the day’s success.
A competition has been held among local schoolchildren to design publicity posters for the day, and the winners were Ellie Mae Wood and Thomas Sugden, both pupils at St Luke’s Primary School.
The idea to re-establish the gala came after a successful summer fun day at the community centre last year.
Matthew Graham, assistant operations manager at the centre, said: “After we held the fun day last year, people said we should bring back the gala.
“It must be decades since the gala ended, so it will be really nice to bring it back. We’ve got quite a lot of stuff planned. We’ll carry on the tradition by announcing the new gala king and queen.
“They used to be driven along on the back of a pick up truck, but I don’t think that will be allowed today.”
The hope is that the revived gala will not just be a one off, with Mr Graham saying: “We would like to make it bigger and better each year, and we hope we keep getting a really good turnout for it.”
The event runs from noon until 4.30pm, and anyone wanting to volunteer can contact the community centre on (01274) 630507.
