A new plan to crack car parking problems outside a Baildon school has been hatched by a ward councillor working closely with public transport chiefs.
Councillor Debbie Davies contacted Metro about constant complaints from householders near Baildon CofE Primary School and suggested altering a bus route to collect more pupils.
“Residents in the Langley Lane area near Baildon Primary are always complaining about double parking and inconsiderate drivers at school arrival and leaving times,” said Coun Davies (Con, Baildon).
“One of the solutions I suggested was to get more kids on the bus – by taking the bus closer to them.
“Recently I was talking to a parent whose child catches the bus from Cliffe Avenue, but has to walk quite far to get it from Woodcot Avenue.
“So I contacted Metro to see if the route the bus took could be altered as there are a lot of families in that area with children who will go to the church school. “ Coun Davies said she was delighted when Metro agreed to help test public opinion on her idea.
“They agreed to run a survey asking for people’s opinions on a possible alteration to the route which would include Station Road and have put details on Twitter, which is great.”
School head teacher Mary Connor has also welcomed Coun Davies’s idea and sent out the link to the online survey in her latest fortnightly letter to parents.
“Children’s safety is paramount for us and we are very concerned about the big issue of parking in our cul-de-sac,” Mrs Connor said.
“Only the other night we had a governors’ meeting where parking was again discussed and anything which cuts the number of cars coming to the school would be a huge benefit.
“There are continually cars parked around the school and if we could relieve pressure on roads around the school by encouraging use of the bus, that would be great.”
A Metro spokesman said: ‘West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s award-winning Mybus school transport service is popular with parents but we’re always looking for ways we can improve the service.
“When a possible change to the route of the P66 Mybus service was suggested, we produced a short online survey to give parents the opportunity to let us know their preference, to provide feedback on the service and help us to understand better how we can meet current and future needs.”
