Bradford is gearing up for a whole host of events as it gets ready for the Grand Depart this summer.

On Sunday, May 25, cyclists will be taking part in a Pace the Train challenge in Oxenhope for The Sue Ryder charity, when competitors on a closed road will try to beat a steam train from Keighley to Oxenhope.

Bradford University’s Cycling4All programme is organising the event with the charity which also involves a choice of other routes. Brighouse-based community bakery LoveBread is running a French and Yorkshire-themed masterclass on Saturday, May 31, and on the same day Wilsden Beer Festival will be including a selection of French wine among imore than 20 Yorkshire beers on tap at the village hall, from 11am to 11pm. There will also be live music and a hog roast.

La Fete Du Tour is looking for more events across the race route and wants to hear from groups and communities interested in putting themelves on the celebration map, or giving a French twist to events already planned.

Those who take part will be able to use the official La Fête du Tour logo.

This year’s Grand Départ of the Tour de France takes place in Yorkshire. The world-famous event starts on Saturday, July 5, with a route from Leeds to Harrogate, taking in parts of the Bradford district, then on Sunday the race will run from York to Sheffield through the Keighley area.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “The fever for Le Tour is spreading and La Fête du Tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for everyone to get involved.

“This will be the first time the UK has engaged with La Fête and is the perfect opportunity for communities along the route to celebrate their part in this historic sporting moment and build momentum before the race weekend.”
