A woman missing for more than a week in Bradford was due to sign a contract for the job she desperately wanted on the day she disappeared, it has emerged.
Anita Racz, 41, was also owed £300 in wages she was due to collect from her new employer but she never arrived at work in the city centre and a police trawl of CCTV has provided no evidence that she even started the journey to work.
A police search of her home found her mobile telephone had been switched to silent and put in a box under her bed – along with her medication for depression.
The disappearance has mystified relatives because her mum Anna and sister Orse were visiting and she had found work after a spell on Jobseekers Allowance, said her uncle, Frank Szabo.
Now her relatives, who live in Hungary, face the agonising choice of whether to try to stay in this country while the hunt for Anita goes on despite running low on money, or to return home.
Mr Szabo said police had checked CCTV footage from the railway station and transport interchange but had found no trace of Anita on the day she disappeared.
“There is no trace of her on any CCTV yet. I’ve asked the police to check CCTV from her flats to make sure she even left the building. She lived on the fourth floor.
“She was very tired when she got home the night before but apart from that we haven’t a clue if anything else was troubling her. She is educated, she was happy to have got work at last.
“My first thought was that she could have been snatched. She needs money to live off and a place to sleep otherwise. I don’t want to think the worse but it’s been a week now and I can’t help feeling she might have just walked away from it all – but her family are still here and she has a responsibility to them. They are distraught.
“Her mum and sister were visiting her and they were very happy, because she had got a job.”
Mr Szabo, who has lived in the UK for 56 years, added: “The police have looked at her bank account and from May 1, no money has been taken out. She was dressed normally that day. Nobody has any idea where she might have gone.”
Anita, who had originally come to the UK after losing her job as a highly-paid financial advisor with a Japanese firm in Hungary, had lived in the UK for two years and had faced a struggle to find new work.
Mr Szabo said she did not have many friends but he knew another Hungarian woman had put her in touch with the plumbers merchants where she got work.
West Yorkshire Police have described her disappearance as out of character and have appealed for anyone who believes they have seen her, or has other information, to contact them by telephone on 101.
Police yesterday released this CCTV image of the last known sighting of Anita Racz.
The image shows the 41-year-old leaving her home in Bolton Road to go to work at about 8.30am on May 1.
She is white, about 5ft 5ins, with long blonde hair and glasses. She was wearing black leggings and a khaki jacket.
Detectives believe Miss Racz walked from her house to Forster Square Railway Station where she got on to the free city bus at 8.41am.
They want to hear from anyone who waited with her at the bus stop, travelled on the bus with her or anyone who saw where she got off.
