Michael Marshall – We Are Here (Orion, £7.99) ***
We Are Here is an engrossing thriller which follows the strange experiences of David, a man who goes from feeling the excitement of knowing that his work is going to be published, to experiencing the fear of being followed by someone who leaves no clues as to what they want from him. As David tries to carry on with daily life, his normal routine begins to unravel with frightening speed, leaving him questioning the motives of those he held dearest. Intriguing and with plenty to think about, this is an interesting novel with sharp dialogue and well-drawn characters.

Alan Gibbons – Hate (Orion, £7.99) ****
Rosie was murdered by a gang of thugs simply because she dressed differently.· Her sister Eve is struggling to come to terms with the death when she meets Anthony, who witnessed the attack but was too scared to do anything to help. Eve’s mother wants Anthony to attend court and identify the killers, but he is terrified of reprisals. When Eve’s friend Oli announces that he’s gay, he becomes the victim of homophobic thugs and Anthony somehow finds the courage to defend him. Based on a true story, this is a moving and moralistic tale.
