Labour Shadow Transport Secretary Mary Creagh joined her party’s candidate for Pudsey, Jamie Hanley, to campaign against feared price hikes for train services.
Opposition to parking charges at 18 West Yorkshire stations, including Shipley, Crossflatts and Guiseley, led the Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, to scrap the idea. Now Labour is concerned the Government intends to recoup that lost potential income with a rise to unregulated fares instead.
Speaking at New Pudsey to promote a petition against fare increases, Mary Creagh said: “People in Pudsey are rightly angry at the prospect of ministers allowing fares to be hiked even further.”
Northern Rail said it had put forward proposals at the Government's request on cutting costs and improving facilities, but a spokesman said as talks were ongoing, no further comment could be made.
