Engineers were tonight carrying out emergency repair work to a gas main in Canal Road, Bradford, after water from a damaged water main made its way into a gas pipe.
The gas supply to around 40 residential properties and 100 commercial and industrial buildings in the area has been temporarily disconnected to enable engineers to safely carry out the work to remove the water from the gas pipe and repair the main.
Engineers from Northern Gas Networks have located the point of the water ingress and are currently removing the water from the gas pipe. Engineers from Yorkshire Water are making the necessary repairs to the leaking water main.
To enable engineers to complete the emergency repair work safely it may be necessary to temporarily close both carriageways of Canal Road heading into Bradford city centre from Shipley.
Ian Cunningham, Customer Operations Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks, said: “The safety of our customers is our number one priority. Our engineers are working hard to remove the water from our pipes so that we can get everyone affected back on gas as quickly as possible.
“We would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused and thank everyone for their patience and understanding.
“If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact an engineer on site or call the Customer Care team on 0845 634 0508, option 2.”
Anyone who smells gas should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
