A volunteer youth worker who smashed into two police cars after speeding off to avoid the law has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and banned from driving for two and a half years.

Ammar Khan, 24, of Padma Close, Listerhills, Bradford, was also ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work for the community.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving uninsured on November 6 last year.

Prosecutor Emma Downing told Bradford Crown Court yesterday Khan sped off in a Volkswagen Golf when police in a marked patrol car ordered him to stop on Whetley Lane, Bradford, at 9pm.

He turned off the car’s lights during a five-minute pursuit in which he reached speeds of 55mph in a 30mph limit. Khan rammed a police car blocking his way on St Leonard’s Road, Girlington, causing £3,400 damage, and reversed into the vehicle chasing after him.

Police officers smashed his car window and pulled him out.

Miss Downing said Khan had never passed a driving test and was disqualified from driving.

He had two passengers in the car.

His barrister, Nick Worsley, said Khan worked in a takeaway and was engaged to be married.

He did voluntary youth work in his local community and was a football coach for young people.

Judge Peter Benson said other road users had been put in danger by Khan’s driving but he had no previous convictions and had resolved never to appear before a court again.
