Police have apologised after handing over a man’s personal belongings to someone else.

The 28-year-old, who wanted to remain anonymous, had been taken to Bradford’s Trafalgar House police station on Sunday afternoon after being questioned over an incident that followed criminal damage to his car.

After being released the next day he went to collect his belongings, including a wallet, phone, bank cards and keys to his house and car. But he was told they had been given to someone else released from the station earlier that day.

The items have since been returned, but not before the man cancelled his bank cards.

He said: “If police can’t secure property in a police station, then who can?

Chief Inspector Damien Miller, of Bradford District Police, said: “We have apologised to him for this handling error and any distress it might have caused him.

“As soon as we became aware of what had happened, we sent out officers to make sure his vehicle and his property were secure.”
