A mother-of-two, who misled police while her husband fled prosecution for a multi-million European fraud, has been jailed for nine months.
Roobina Rafique-Alam, 41, delayed telling anyone as her husband Asif was taken to Leeds-Bradford Airport to catch a flight to Pakistan, and then reported him missing to police, expressing her concern for his safety.
She pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Asif Alam is still on the run.
Prosecutor Ken Green said that in February last year, Asif was arrested on a European warrant. He was facing an allegation of fraud in Germany involving 2.5m euros.
He fought extradition, but it was confirmed at a final hearing in October, and police met the defendant and her husband to discuss how it would take place.
Mr Green said that at 1.20am on November 10, the defendant contacted police and said her husband had gone missing the day before.
She said he had left a note saying: “It would be better if I was dead,” and she expressed concern about his safety.
In her police statement she said her husband had been depressed about the extradition and she regarded him as a suicide risk.
But Mr Green said her husband had flown out at 6.30pm on Saturday and Rafique-Alam had been present when friends of her husband attended their home in Bude Road, West Bowling, Bradford, and provided him with money to assist him to flee the country. She was later arrested.
