Advanced manufacturers in Yorkshire are leading the way in changing the face of production, according to new findings.
And they are among the most optimistic in the UK about market trends, the latest GE Advanced Manufacturing report shows.
The research reveals 86 per cent of Yorkshire companies use custom manufacturing practices, creating bespoke products for global customers.
Control systems and sustainable technologies are also widely deployed in the region, which researchers said highlighted the depth of advanced manufacturing industry in Yorkshire and a shift away from dirty shop floors and the “oily rag” image of the past.
The report recorded its highest overall business confidence ratings since it began in January 2011.
In Yorkshire, 86 per cent of advanced manufacturers said market conditions, were better than 12 months ago – significantly above the national average of 67 per cent. Only seven per cent said conditions were the same or worse.
Looking ahead, 93 per cent of regional firms expect their businesses to grow, with nearly two-thirds expecting growth of above six per cent.
Advanced manufacturers’ perceptions of current and future prospects create a confidence index rating for Yorkshire of 87,way above the national index of 68.
Regional firms also showed strong investment intentions, with 64 per cent expecting to increase employee numbers in 2014, above the national average of 55 per cent.
